Do you know of a way to manipulate the back round on the second image of the child , the close up, in stead of the round spots behind her. Not with a computer but in camera. Thank You

"Remember your camera always focuses with the lens at maximum aperture". No it does not. Nikons don't go below F/2.8 (right in order to minimize focus shift), I guess other brands are similar in this respect.

Can you recommend a good tutorial that can instruct me on how to properly pair my lens to camera body? Specifically on how to judge how much microfocus adjustments are needed and how to do it?

I am using an EF 85mm f/1.2L Mk II with a 5D Mk II

I'm getting pretty good results so far, but I do see some slight focus issues in the center when wide open.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Roger,

Fabulous article. Something that helps with the focus-shift problem on fast primes is to use your depth-of-field preview button. You won't notice viewfinder dimming until at least f/2.8, and it helps the phase-detect focus system get the correct focus since it now sees the shifted-focus image.

[...] Though camera bodies have become quite complex throughout the years, they are still simple in premise. The camera body is merely a light proof box which permits entry of light for a limited period of time. Just long enough for creatively correct exposure, in fact. But before entry, that light must be prepared and molded for the respective photograph. The lens on our camera is the most important photographic tool that we use to interpret what our heart sees. It’s quite possible to mount a standard zoom lens on a body, prepared to capture everything adequately. The photograph will be sharp, filled with contrast, and pleasantly composed. While a good zoom is often our weapon of choice and necessity, it is not the proper tool many times. When we have time and are not operating in documentary mode, we always prefer a prime lens. Here’s an interesting article on prime lenses.
