Leica Elmarits didn't show up until the 1950's, and wide angle Elmarits not until the late 60's with the 28 first and the 21 about a decade later. Leica's first own design for a wider than 35 was the 28 Hektor, and they didn't have their own wider than 28 design until the 21 Elmarit came out.

Very nice and interesting articles. Thanks.

Great summary, Roger. The one thing I don't see (hopefully because it's self-evident) is that for exactly the reasons you state, combining a wide angle with a zoom almost always involves a loss in quality when compared to the best fixed focal length wide angles. In fact, I would have said this was always the case until I tired a 14-24. Also (again, hopefully obvious) since wide angles and telephotos are such different designs, by definition, a wide to tele zoom cannot be equally good at both tasks. Perhaps this is too subjective but I think an article about convenience vs. quality would be very interesting.

Great article. I've been looking for the reason why ultra wide lenses are so expensive and yet don't have good optics. I found the answer here.

I like that idea. I think it would make a really great article. And mostly I have no knowledge about that era, so I get to do a month's interesting reading first. Thanks for the suggestion!

Roger, any ideas on writing an artical on today's major players (Canon & Nikon), when Japanese overtook lens development from European players..

Something perhaps to include ... info about the relative performance of these early lenses compared to modern counterparts. That was the part I found most interesting in the "Cooking with Glass" article.

I was also wondering if there is software that allows playing around with lens designs. Allow "what if" games? Autodesk Autocad'ish capabilities?

I've vaguely aware of "finite element analysis" with software, and VSLI chip design with software. My impression is that lens design is very automated now.

Thank you both. I have to agree. So it's all one page after you leave the intro now. Really appreciate you letting me know - I'm still learning my way around the new formatting. And, of course, if there's a new toy I have to try it out. Sometimes try and fail :-)

Agree with Nikhil; liked the article but not the new format. I feel most of us have either scroll wheels or multi-touch trackpads by now. Still, wide-angle photography is still some of my favorite and I really enjoyed the article. Can't wait for the next one!

This one was a bit dry, but still enjoyable. Particularly that bit about the . . . what did you call it? . . . ah yes, film. Not a big fan of the multipage format though, I'm tempted to ask for a refund of the entrance fee.
