Lens Lotto is back!

Lens Lotto
This time last year, Tim spent most of a week deciding what lenses he wanted to take on his trip to Ireland and made us all crazy in the process. We kept score and he changed his mind about 5 times a day. On the last day, about 10 times. Finally he turned to Aaron and said “You pick for me.” Which Aaron did. I believe he picked the one lens Tim hadn’t considered but the more Tim thought about it, the more he liked the choice—it’s a lens he’s never shot with before, but when last seen he was pretty excited about it.
We are entering our slow season (Winter), we have plenty of stock on the shelves and more free time than usual, so we decided it would be fun to offer that option to our customers too, so Drew has set up “Lens Lotto” for our Canon and Nikon shooters. Here’s how it works:
- 1 You order a Lens Lotto lens from the Wide, Normal, or Telephoto range.
- 2 Give us a brief, general description of what you want to do and what camera you’ll be shooting with in the special instructions box. The less specific the better: the idea is for us to pick out a lens that will likely be different for you, maybe get you a new perspective and a chance to try something you might not consider. You can also pick which Lensrentals employee makes the choice for you if you have a preference.
- 3 We guarantee the Lens Lotto price is less than the regular price of the lens we’ll send you. (If we’re convinced there’s a cheaper lens that would be perfect, we’ll send you that at a discounted price from its normal rental, but that would be really rare.)
We hope it will be fun, give you a chance to try something different when you aren’t sure what you want, or maybe just break you out of your photography rut and let you shoot from a different perspective. Maybe even get you a lens you couldn’t otherwise afford at a bargain price.
The other thing is that you’ll be getting some staff member’s favorite lenses. Our crew gets to take lenses home to shoot with every weekend, its the best way for us all to get experience with all of our equipment. We all have favorite lenses that we have think everyone should try, and here’s an easy way to get those recommendations.

Lens Lotto – Canon Telephoto

You guys rock! I did this last year and had a lot of fun with it. I think I’ll try something new/different this year. Might have to experiment with Canon (I’m a Nikon guy), just to get ready for that killer new 1Dx.

Where is the love for sony shooters? I would love to try this out for some events this holiday season, but I guess not.

Hi Adam,
It’s not that we don’t love Sony shooters, we do. But we just don’t have as much Sony stock: We don’t want to choose a lens based on “what’s available”, that wouldn’t be fair at all.

I got a lens through the lotto in April 2011 — can I enter the contest?

HI Karen,
I think so, but you’d better shoot and email to Michael or Drew: they run the contests but don’t check the blog posts very often.

Roger,
Me and the Mrs have media passes for the Texas Tech / Oklahoma State game Saturday. I will send you some up close and personal photos taken with one of the used lens you sold me,, it is great for football. Does Memphis U have a football team or just basketball?

Sounds like fun, I look forward to giving my “Lotto” lens a whirl for some Thanksgiving holiday pics. Fun concept that I missed last time around, thanks for giving it a spin again!
