Hi Roger, thank you for the field review; one thing to point out: the Canon's file seems to be less unshap-masked than the Oly's file - that's probably the difference in 'sharpness' or 'softness'; you can apply more USM to the Canon's RAW to get more similar comparison. Cheers, Andrej

Hi,
I converted from Nikon D7000 + 18-200 to OMD EM5 with kit lens. D7000 great camera but when travelling with family gets heavy after 6 hours walk and second day becomes even worse...so switched..do no regret a moment.
Got the 45 mm 1.8 and the Pana 25mm 1.4. Now selling the 12-50 kit lens and the 25mm so buy the 12-35mm for all purpose. Camera and lens will be weather proof and do not need to worry.
Plus when making street photography or walk around, it is not easy to swith a lens all the time...so this one I hope will do all. And for any portrait works etc I will still have the 45mm 1.8. And got the 45-200mm for sports shots of my kid.
Micro four thirds is the future...

I've had this lens for thee months now and all I can say is wow! The image quality I get from this relatively small zoom is amazing. It's sharp and contrasty at all settings, the autofocus is fast and silent and the build quality and feel are excellent. Only when I need a shallow depth of field or a wider aperture I grab a prime like the 14, 20 or 45mm. This lens is a winner!

Actually, the price has dropped $200 since this article was first published. Amazon currently lists it at $1099. (Shipped and sold by Amazon.com)

I've had this lens for a month or so, and I have to say it's fantastic. I agree that it is on the expensive side, but Amazon just dropped the price $100, so that helps future buyers.
This lens is one of the most beautiful I've owned, and the pictures it produces are stunning. m43 is finally growing up; though we've had a plethora of great primes for a while, Panasonic and Oly (with the *hopefully* upcoming 40-150 2.8) are finally upping their game and pushing this system into pro territory.
I am ecstatic to see this level of dedication from both companies and can't wait to see what's next.

I bought the EM-5 in combinations with the 12-50mm kit lens. I gave it a chance, but I quickly sold the 12-50mm. It's a nice allround macro lens, but the image quality does not do the EM-5 (nor any other micro 4/3 camera) justice. It's too soft and too slow for my taste. The Panasonic 12-35mm is sharper at any setting and of course the build quality is excellent. The 12-35mm looks right, feels right and delivers excellent image quality. The 12-50mm is no competition in that department.

Any thoughts on image quality of this vs the Oly 12-50mm/f3.5-6.3 zoom. I'm a recent OM-D convert (from Canon) and picked up that lens as part of the 'upgraded kit.' I'm pretty happy with the image quality for what I paid for it, especially given its versatility, and have been thinking I'd need to complement it with primes on the short end to get a significant bump in IQ.

Granted, a big part of what you're paying for here is perhaps a couple of extra stops on the long end, but that's not as big a deal to me mostly because (a) I have the 45/1.8 and (b) the on-body OIS is so good.

I have a 12-35 on order an "shipping" from Amazon if one wants to believe that. I have all the primes and zooms from Olympus and some from Panasonic and have been struggling as to whether or not to get this lens. It would make a great walk around but it does not sound like it is on the level of a Nikon 24-70 2.8 which I have shot with. I shall probably let it come in but I am not sure it will equal the primes.

Hey, does the Panasonic lens chatter like the 25mm 1.4 on the OM-D? If so, is it as loud as that one?

Thanks,
Danny
