Dan - no, they don't. They have an automated tuning that goes on as they assemble the lens, and an semi-automated calibration at the end of assembly.

Presumably the manufacturers go though this long process of fine tuning each individual lens as it comes off their production line? Or do they have a more automated process that is less time consuming?

I sort of wish I had noticed this article before now....this is part comment part question. I am on vacation and had been counting heavily on a combination of a Sony nex-5n with either a Leicester summicron 35 or an Olympus 50mm 1.4. I also have the kit zoom with me that I have rarely used. I have noticed over the last week or so that the Leica doesn't really seem to focus correctly. I use the contrast focus and get what SEEEMS rig but when I review the images later, they seem to miss....it is a little frustrating. I have some once in a lifetime pops that in review, I appear to have missed overtone (thankfully I have been given access again) but I wondered if anyone sle had the same experience. If is causing me to use the Olympus more, as it seems to be spot on and it clearly resolves better than the kit lense...but it also makes me think I am doing something wrong with the summicron, or potentially the M mount adaptor,m or the Raw conversion othe ipad. In a perfect world I would settle in and do a bunch of tests, but I should have done that last week, before I was in the field. Are there adjustments that might need to have been done to the summicron?

And this, among many other reasons, is why I own 2 used lenses from LensRentals.com, and would not balk an instant at renting or buying again. I have the "Used Equipment" page bookmarked, check it everyday for my next gem. It's a seldom remembered lesson these days: Great Customer Service and attention to details = Repeat Business and Honest Profits. I'll do my best to keep spreading the LR gospel. Thanks, Roger, and to your wonderful team, too!

Hi John,

I have two up. One on overall testing and another on a specific test for decentering.

Roger...

I will probably never be brave enough to open up and try to adjust a lens.

What I would like, is some guidance to test a lens to see if I have a problem after having dropped one.

Could you do a write up on that?

Candidate for another news piece perhaps? What kind of tools do you use? Where do you find the small scale, good quality drivers of various sorts that you must have? What makes a good 'basic' set for a home user?
