Canon 300mm f/4L IS

Comparatively small, very sharp telephoto lens with an excellent Image Stabilization system. The 300f4 is easily handheld in decent light. This is an excellent travel or hiking telephoto lens and my favorite “zoo” lens.
One interesting feature is its ability to focus as close as 5 feet away, much closer than most telephoto lenses, which allows it to be used almost as a Macro lens. With a 1.4x teleconverter it becomes a very nice 420mm f5.6 lens – with image stabilization – a very nice alternative to the Canon 400mm f5.6 lens.

Roger’s Take: No one talks about this lens much, but its one of my favorites. Its sharper, faster, and lighter weight than the 100-400 “L” and the close focusing ability is nice to have. With a 1.4x teleconverter it becomes a 420mm f5.6 IS. If I know I’ll be shooting 300-400 range I prefer that combination to the 100-400. Like the 200 f2.8, this lens is one of those great Canon lenses that no one tries often, but those who do rent it again and again – or buy their own.
