Camera - Sony EX1
The Sony EX1 is the first camera in the sub-$10,000 price range to offer 3 1/2" CMOS sensors, offering image clarity and low light performance not available with a smaller sensor. It features a fixed 14x lens and records to SxS cards. Using XDCAM, the EX1 is capable of a variety of HD resolutions and frame rates.

The fixed Fujinon 14x lens features fully manual iris and zoom rings and a dual-mode focusing system. The lens also has a macro focus setting, which allows for great close-ups and shallow depth of field shots. (The 1/2" sensors help the depth of field nicely also.) It has clear, 1/8, and 1/64 ND filters built in.

Need a spare battery? It comes with 2 batteries and a charger, but a spare is always a good idea.
Available recording modes include HQ (35Mbps) and SP (25Mbps). Recording modes include 1080 and 720 resolution, with frame rates of 59.94i, 50i, 29.97p, 25p, and 23.97p. In 720 recording, 59.97p and 50p are also available. Output via HD-SDI offers 4:2:2 subsampling for an even higher quality recording option. SDI out is also the only way to capture SD video from this camera (if you need it).
Mike’s Take: A great little camera. 1/2" sensors built into a easily handheld camera, with a high quality built-in lens. The only thing I don’t love about this camera is the lack of shoulder mount. But, I guess I’m just spoiled. And it is nice to handhold. I could attach it to the Redrock shoulder mount and be good to go. Or use its bigger brother instead.
