Canon’s longest focal length macro lens. The longer focal length allows a longer working distance to the subject than do the smaller macro lenses. The lens is exceptionally sharp and can double as a short telephoto lens, however being a macro lens, autofocus speed is a bit slower than most lenses.
We recommend using a tripod unless the lighting is excellent.
Roger’s take: This is a pretty large lens, one I’d recommend using a tripod with unless you’ve got strong hands and great technique. Other than that though, its an amazing lens. Extremely sharp and at 180mm you can get a lot of distance between the lens and the subject, which can be important for some types of Macro shooting. The long focal length also tends to make the background more blurred, really isolating the subject from the background. But its a specialty lens — unless you’re a dedicated Macro shooter you’d probably be better off with a 100 or 150mm Macro and a little less size.
