Canon 2x Teleconverter

Provides 2 X image magnification at the cost of 2 f-stops of aperture. Some loss of image occurs even when used with L quality telephoto prime lenses. While the 2X can be used with “L” quality telephoto zooms (70-200 f2.8 and longer) we don’t really recommend it for the 100-400 Canon zoom or any 3rd party zoom. On non-1 series cameras use of a 2X teleconverter will require manual focus on any lens with an aperture greater than f2.8.

PLEASE NOTE: the Canon 2X will not fit on wide angle or standard zooms, wide angle primes or third-party lenses. For these you should use the Kenko 1.5X converter for Canon which will fit almost every lens.

REALLY PLEASE NOTE: If you rent a 2X teleconverter and are using it on any lens other than the Canon 200 f2.0 IS, 300 f2.8 IS, 400 f2.8 IS, 500 f4 IS, or 600 f4 IS, you are probably not going to be happy with the result, if it will work at all. If you decide you want to use it with another lens, you do so at your own risk – please don’t expect us to refund the rental when it didn’t work with your 70-300 f5.6 zoom.

Roger’s take: There is no free lunch: if you could double the focal length of a lens with no downside for $250, then why wouldn’t they just build these in? 2X teleconverters are useful if you’re shooting “L” telephoto primes on a tripod, especially with a 1D series body.

They are going to give up 2 f-stops of aperture, making an f4 lens and f8 (that will probably be sharper stopped down to f11). On a non 1 series body, that’s not going to autofocus at all (or at least not at all accurately). On a zoom, they’re going to degrade image quality, although a few folks do shoot them on 70-200 f2.8 lenses with decent results.
