Canon’s better non-L series 50mm lens, featuring a f/1.4 aperture.
The wide aperture allows the lens to be used in dim lighting, but it shows better sharpness stopped down to f/2.0 or so. The lens blurs backgrounds nicely but because of its wider depth of field, not nearly as much as the 85mm lenses. A good lens for group portraits or spontaneous indoor pictures, especially when you don’t want to bother everyone with your flash.
Roger’s take: When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. NASA scientists spent $2 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 degrees Celsius. The Russians used a pencil. This is the pencil of 50mm lenses. You can spend a lot more and get something cool and fancy. This just does the job efficiently and at a good price.
Small enough to fit in your pocket, its nice to carry around ‘just in case I need a wide aperture’. A very nice lens at a bargain price.
