The Canon EOS 1D X is the new flagship DSLR from Canon. While previous 1D models have been had APS-H sensor, Canon has combined the 1D and 1Ds-series with the 1D X. At it’s heart is an 18.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor, with dual DIGIC 5+ and one DIGIC 4 image processors. This amount of processing power is required to handle the 1D X’s blazing 12fps with full AF (optional 14fps with mirror up shooting JPEG). It’s new 61-point AF system is the most advanced to date, complete with it’s own menu tab full of advanced options. Another area where the processing power aids is in ISO performance. The 1D X has a standard ISO range of 100-51,200, with the ability to expand to 50-204,800. Not only does it have larger individual pixels than the cameras it stands to replace, but it boasts the lowest measured noise of any EOS camera made before it. The 100K-pixel RGB metering sensor ensures accurate color and and exposure for both video and stills.
On the video side, the 1D X is among the best of HDSLRs. Like previous models, it records 1080p at 24/25/30fps, as well as 720p at 50/60fps. It adds several requested features such as in-camera audio level adjustment, timecode embedding, expanded clip length of 30 minutes, and two compression methods (ALL-I and IPB) for optimum quality. The improved full-frame sensor provides reduced moire and artifacts, combined with the full ISO 100-51,200 range possible during video recording, makes high quality, extreme low-light recording possible.
Physically, the camera body has several advancements. The enlarged 3.2" 1,040K-dot TFT LCD makes image review and live-view recording greatly improved, while the 100% viewfinder with overlay allows for highly customizable viewing. The button layout is fairly different from previous 1D-series cameras, with all shooting setting buttons made accessible with the right hand, and all playback and image processing settings with the left. There’s two new multi-directional controllers for both horizontal and vertical shooting, which in combination with the button shift, makes changing shooting orientations seamless. Not stopping there, the addition of four user-definable custom Fn buttons on the front of the camera body (2 each for both orientations) gives users the flexibility to control their preferred settings with ease. Listening to user feedback, the 1D X now features two CF-slots rather than the 1 CF and 1 SD slots of it’s predecessor. While Canon is offering a higher capacity LP-E4N battery with the 1D X, it’s still backwards-compatible with previous LP-E4 batteries.
