With the continuing evolution of resolution-hungry DSLR cameras comes the need for improved staples. The Canon 24-70mm f2.8L II is the update to the extremely popular original 24-70mm f2.8L. It has a redesigned optics system that utilizes the latest in Canon technology, providing images that are sharp throughout the zoom range, with chromatic and spherical aberrations held to a minimum. It features Canon’s smudge and fingerprint resistent Fluorine coating on both front and rear exposed elements.

The most noticeable difference between the old and new 24-70L II is the physical appearance itself. While the old 24-70L was easy to spot in a crowd, the new version has a similar appearance to several other L-series lenses. It’s smaller in size and weight than it’s predecessor, which is a greatly welcomed change. Improvements to the barrel’s sealing make it dust and water resistant for shooting in adverse conditions. It also gains a zoom-lock switch to allow easy transport without worrying about barrel damage from zoom creep. One big change to note is the increased filter size to an 82mm thread, which is up from the original’s 77mm filter size.

The Canon 24-70mm f2.8L II is ideal for nearly any type of photography. Many photographers will attach it and almost never change lenses. It’s fast f2.8 aperture allows for low-light event shooting, as well as a shallow depth-of-field required for portraiture. If you prefer a zoom lens to a prime, this is the Cadillac of standard zooms.
