The 300mm f/2.8L IS is arguably THE sharpest telephoto Canon makes. Its reasonable weight and fast aperture makes it a favorite of sports shooters. The reasonable size and excellent image stabilization allow it to be handheld (for a while) but is most often shot with a monopod or tripod. It remains quite sharp with 1.4x and even 2x teleconverters.
