The 300mm f/2.8L IS was for years arguably THE sharpest telephoto Canon makes. Its reasonable weight and fast aperture makes it a favorite of sports shooters. The reasonable size and excellent image stabilization allow it to be handheld (for a while) but is most often shot with a monopod or tripod. It remains quite sharp with 1.4x and even 2x teleconverters.
There is a new Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS II has taken the sharpest lens made title away (although just by a bit) and is significantly lighter weight and more expensive.
