The Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG HSM is a super telephoto prime lens for Canon EF mount cameras. It offers a relatively fast f/4.5 aperture, providing images with great background separation. It features Sigma’s built-in HSM autofocus motor, giving very quick and accurate performance that’s ideal for sports and wildlife photography.
It offers an advanced optical formula that features two ELD elements to minimize chromatic aberrations while providing accurate color rendition with great corner-to-corner sharpness. Its multi-layer lens coating helps to reduce ghosting and lens flare, with the detachable lens hood providing further prevention.
While you lose just a bit of aperture speed when compared to other manufacturer’s 500mm primes, the Sigma offers a relatively slimmed-down design. Despite this reduction in mass, there’s still a removable tripod ring and drop-in filter for ensuring optimum image quality. It also has a very useful focus limit switch that helps to prevent any stray focus hunting.

This is a lens with a very nice niche. It’s significantly smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the Canon 500mm f/4. It’s very sharp even wide open in the center and good in the corners (not that corners are usually critical working with a 500mm lens). The size makes it ideal when you have weight restrictions (African safaris usually do, for example).
There are always compromises, of course. There’s no optical stabilization so you’ll need to be on a good tripod or bean bag for support. You can use a 1.4x teleconverter, but that gives you an f/6.3 lens so AF will deteriorate on most cameras. But for a lot of what I want a 500mm lens for, this gives some significant advantages.
