The Sigma 100-300mm provides a unique lens not quite matched by anything else. It is relatively small and light for a telephoto zoom (similar in size to Canon’s 70-200 f/2.8L IS II) and with a fixed f/4.0 aperture, is faster at 300mm than the Canon 100-400mm and other telephoto zooms. Numerous reviewers state that this, along with the Simga 120-300 f/2.8 OS, are the best lenses Sigma makes because they are quite sharp, fairly easy to handhold in good light, and have image quality very similar to the Canon 100-400mm.

First, let me say this is a superb lens. It’s sharp as a tack, autofocuses fairly well (apparently a bit less accurately in Canon mount when lighting is poor but otherwise is good), and pulls off the difficult twosome of being both reasonably sized and sturdily built. However, it reminds me of the expression “a triumph of technology over common sense.” It does what it does very well, but I personally don’t need what it does very often. If I want a telephoto lens, I generally want at least 400mm, and with a teleconverter mounted to it the 100-300mm loses some of its luster and becomes a rather ordinary f/5.6 lens. If I’m shooting up to 200mm, I’d rather have an f/2.8 lens. So I find it useful as a telezoom on a crop camera or to get a bit more reach than a 70-200 when the light is good. The bottom line: when I use it, I really like it, but I just don’t use it that often.
