  • Sigma SD1 Merrill / Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A1 Kit

The Sigma SD1 Merrill / Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A1 Kit contains the 46MP Foveon sensor Sigma SD1 Merrill DSLR and the SA Mount Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM A1. Chosen due to its high build and image quality, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 provides a nice, one-lens solution for most standard shooting situations.

Please Note: We do not rent the SD1 Merrill, nor the SA Mount 35mm f/1.4 separately from the kit.

    The Camera:

The Sigma SD1 Merrill comes equipped with a one of a kind 46-Megapixel APS-C Foveon CMOS sensor, recording three layers a 4800 × 3200 pixel image, one of each primary RGB color. This renders a RAW file size up to 45 MB, so plan your workflow accordingly. The SD1 shoots between 5-6 frames/sec. in continuous shooting mode, depending on your file quality setting, with a relatively small buffer of 7 frames when using the High quality setting (14 frames when used in Medium or Low). With an ISO range of 100-6400, the SD1 does have some flexibility, but noise starts to become prevalent past ISO 800.

The camera boasts a pretty simple button layout, with a 3.0 TFT color monitor (460,000 pixel resolution), while construction of the camera itself is solid, yet lightweight, using a magnesium alloy design to withstand rough use and shocks that might occur in the field. The body also benefits from a weather-resistant design by the use of O-ring seals between the body and buttons to prevent dust and water from getting inside.

    The Lens:

The Sigma 35mm 1.4 DG HSM A1 is the first lens released from their Art category of lenses. It offers users a high quality semi-wide / standard focal length of 35mm, popular for use in just about any type of photography. With its fast f/1.4 aperture, you have the flexibility to shoot in low lighting conditions if needed, with ample background separation great for portraiture. The in-lens HSM focusing motor provides compatibility with a wider variety of cameras, with fast and accurate autofocus performance. It’s compatible with both full-frame and crop-frame cameras.

The floating internal focus design allows for higher optical performance when shooting at a close focus distance, with the front of the barrel remaining stationary regardless of focus distance. By utilizing two variations of low dispersion elements (FLD and SLD), the Sigma 35mm A1 has little to no chromatic aberrations. The aspheric lens at the front of the lens series helps minimize both distortion and vignetting, and the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. From a build standpoint, the 35mm A1 offers great improvement over previous Sigma lenses.

Sigma used to measure lens performance with the standard MTF measuring system, using conventional sensors. However, they have since developed a proprietary MTF measuring system (A1) using their 46MP resolution Foveon direct image sensors, as found in the SD1. According to the manufacturer, previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of their quality control inspections, allowing improved manufacturing tolerances with improved image quality and performance.

Note: If you shoot RAW, you must download and use Sigma Photo Pro to convert your files to .TIFF and then export them to the software of your choice, as main stream programs such as Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture One, etc. do not support the Sigma SD1 Merrill. Or you can use the Sigma Photo Pro software to tweak your image, though it can be slow and lacking in features when compared to other programs. Once again, YOU CAN NOT OPEN IN APERTURE, LIGHTROOM, ETC. WITHOUT CONVERTING THE IMAGES IN SIGMA PHOTO PRO FIRST. We do not include the SPP software, though it can be downloaded HERE for free.
