The E-5 offers a 12.3 Megapixel, four-thirds sensor, 3 inch LCD with 270 degree swivel, Olympus in-body image stabilization, and a splash-proof, weather resistant construction. It also shoots 720p video at 30 frames per second. The autofocus system has a Twin cross type (fully biaxial) 11-point AF sensor, based on proprietary Olympus micro-sensing technologies that achieve equally effective performance on both the vertical and horizontal axis.

Wow! Take any aspect of this camera and that’s what you will say. It improves on pretty much everything Olympus has done in the past. Is it as groundbreaking as previous E-x cameras—not so much. But it definitely brings 4/3 to the same level as the big boys. If I had to pick what the best thing about this camera was, it would be image clarity and sharpness. It’s absolutely crazy how much detail is in the 12 MP files that come out of this camera.
The build is fantastic. The screen … oh my gosh. Olympus have finally put a good screen on something! My only complaint would be the noise performance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s improved from previous generations. However, it does show some noise, even at relatively low ISOs. It’s fixable in post-processing, but this isn’t about what you can do in post-processing. It’s about the flagship E-5. If you have some good Zuiko lenses, you’ll see things you’ve never imagined with them in front of this guy. If you’re invested in the 4/3 system, you’ll love the E-5. Two thumbs up!
