The Sony DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars were designed with sports and wildlife enthusiasts in mind. However, instead of just viewing, these binoculars offer still and video recording. You have the option of recording 7.1MP stills in 4:3 or 5.3MP stills in 16:9. As for video, you can record 1080/60P in either 2D or 3D. The DEV-5 utilizes two autofocusing Sony f1.8-3.4 G-Lenses (10x optical/ 20x digital) that record images and video to dual 1/4" 4.2MP Back-Illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS sensors. Each lens features Sony’s Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode, which allows for stabilization during standard viewing as well as panning.
Rather than using the typical optical viewfinder you would find in traditional binoculars, the DEV-5 uses 2 electronic viewfinders at a resolution of 852 × 480 each. By doing so, this allows the user to see what the camera records as it’s recording. There is a dedicated button for switching the viewing mode between 2D and 3D.
Video is recorded in 3D AVCHD for 3D and AVCHD 2.0 for 2D. The DEV-5 records to SDHC/XC memory cards, as well as Sony’s Memory Stick PRO Duo. It has a built-in GPS receiver for geo-tagging both photos and videos. There’s a microphone input for connecting an external mic, as well as a cold-shoe for mounting the mic (cold-shoe= no phantom power). The mini-HDMI (type C) port makes playing video back on a 3DTV or standard 2D HDTV possible. While the binoculars are easily hand-held, they do have a tripod hole for mounting to a tripod or monopod. It’s powered by a Sony NP-FV70 battery which gives 3.5hrs of recording time.
