Please note: This is a camera-only rental, you will need to also rent a lens. Also, while the picture shows a silver camera, we have received silver, white, and black. We cannot guarantee which color you will receive. (Well, other than it will be silver, white, or black. It won’t be red or yellow or something.)
The E-P3 is the third generation Olympus Digital Pen camera. It has the same 12.3 Megapixel Micro 4/3 sensor, but with a faster processor (TruePic VI). It has a much talked about and improved 35 focus point autofocus system that is far faster than its predecessor – it is said to be nearly SLR autofocus fast. It also has a new and very nice 3" OLED touch-screen viewfinder that lets you do everything from menu commands to selecting autofocus points.
It shoots both stills and video (now improved to 1080 60i HD Video with a choice of ACVHD or AVI codecs. No more Motion jpg). It’s compatible with all Micro 4/3 lenses and a variety of other lenses via adapters. It shoots from ISO 100-12,800 (Note: it shoots 12,800. I didn’t say the pictures were good. I said it shoots it).
Please note: The software is copyrighted and cannot be sent out with the camera. You will need an image processing software program on your computer to process RAW images and as with all new cameras, check your software to see if they have added the RAW converter for the EP-3.
This camera is great! It’s small, light, and gives killer images. Olympus took the EP-2 and gave it an overhaul. Improvement in autofocus alone makes this camera a wonderful upgrade. Not only is it blazing fast, but it could be the most accurate AF I’ve ever used. The new touchscreen controls, which I was hesitant about at first, are fantastic. They managed to take a somewhat novel idea for a camera and make it not only functional, but great! While the high ISO isn’t quite what I’d like it to be, it’s still usable for web use.
With so many small camera, big sensor options, it’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed trying to decide. One big advantage you have with the EP-3 over the Sony mirrorless system is lens selection. Since the m4/3 format has been around for a couple years, they have some great, fast prime lenses. It’s very easy to build a camera system based on the current native m4/3 offerings. The same can’t be said for the other guys yet. If you are looking for a small camera with awesome AF, great controls and DSLR-quality images, the EP-3 is your beast of choice. Just make sure you get the VF-2 Viewfinder, it makes all the difference in the world.
