The Panasonic GX1 is the long awaited follow up to the widely popular Panasonic GF1 and is based around a 16mp sensor that has been tweaked for the balance of resolution and ISO performance. The camera has an ISO range of 160-12800 and features the Lumix LightSpeed AF, which syncs the sensor and lens together at 120fps and provides fast, accurate 0.09 second AF with compatible lenses even in low-light. It also offers AF tracking, in combination with it’s 4.2fps continuous mode, makes shooting moving subjects easy.
The 3" 460K LCD has touch-screen capability for both viewing and shooting. With it’s full-area focusing, you can touch anywhere in the viewable area to focus, which makes focus points a thing of the past. The GX1 features a total of 4 customizable Fn buttons (2 onscreen, 2 actual buttons). There is also an actual rubber handgrip, which makes holding the camera MUCH easier.
If needed, the GX1 has a built-in pop-up flash (Guide no 7.6) to provide your subject a little fill-flash. For those who prefer a viewfinder to composing via LCD, the GX1 has a new optional EVF, the Panasonic LVF2. Do note, however, that the older LVF1 is not compatible with the GX1.
As for video features, the GX1 records 1080/60i full HD in AVCHD format. With the convenient touch-screen LCD, you have very accurate rack-focusing at your fingertips. Also, while recording, you can shoot 11.5mp stills without a hitch. It has 2 built-in stereo microphones, with 4 levels of audio input and a digital wind cut filter.
Panasonic’s answer to the Olympus E-P3, the GX1 offers good image quality and customizable controls. Personally, I prefer the Olympus system over Panasonic, but the GX1 is still a very good camera.
