This 300mm f4 prime lens is superbly sharp. Small enough for travel or hiking with Silent Wave Motor for quick, silent autofocusing. Takes a 1.4x teleconverter very well, but may have trouble autofocusing with a 2x converter.
Roger’s Take: This is an extremely useful and underutilized lens. Its far sharper than the 80-400 zoom at 300mm and with a 1.4X converter becomes a 420mm f5.6 that’s still about as sharp as the 80-400. Personally I’ll give up the convenience of the zoom for the image quality of the 300 f4. But I’m in the minority there, most people prefer the zoom.
