Nikon 85mm f/1.4 D IF

One of the top medium range prime lenses, the 85 f1.4 is phenomenally sharp and is known for its smooth bokeh in out-of-focus regions which, combined with its narrow depth of field, gives a remarkable 3-D effect. Its often used as a long portrait lens or for indoor sports.

D40/60 owners, please consult your manual to double check compatibility with this lens.

For Sale: We have one more copy of the 85 f1.4 lens rotating out of stock. It is in good (8/10) condition (our grading scale is HERE ): perfect mechanicals, electrical system and couple of tiny coating flaws in the front element (cleaning marks) that do not affect image quality at all, but do lower the grade and resale price. There are a few very minor paint scratches and scuffs on the plastic hood or lens caps. $949 with a 3 day inspection period during which you can return it for refund if not completely happy, and a 90 day warranty against failure during normal use.

Roger’s take: This is an interesting lens to me. Interesting meaning I’m still not quite sure what I think of it despite shooting it a lot. Lets start with the clear-cut reason I shoot it: its the best autofocus 85mm f1.4 prime lens made for Nikon cameras. It has very smooth out-of-focus highlights, great color and a wonderful 3-D effect. Its very well built and sturdy. Really, its an excellent lens.

So why the hesitation? There area couple of minor things about it that drive me crazy. It does autofocus but on its own pace, which is rather slow. You aren’t shooting indoor sports with it (unless you have killer instincts about where the shot is going to be). And I hate the screw-on metal hood. Plus it has a bit more chromatic aberration than I like (I know, that’s easy to fix in post processing). Mostly though, while I like the lens a lot I think it could be so much better. I much prefer the Zeiss 85 and I don’t mind manually focusing so I reach for that more, but I realize that’s not for everyone. So my conclusion? A very nice lens that badly needs a makeover to make it a great lens. Come on Nikon and redo this one. Please??
