Nikon 85mm f/1.4D AF

Available May 1, 2014

One of the top medium range prime lenses, the 85 f/1.4 is phenomenally sharp and is known for its smooth bokeh in out-of-focus regions which, combined with its narrow depth of field, gives a remarkable 3-D effect. Its often used as a long portrait lens or for indoor sports.

Please note: This lens does not have a built-in autofocus motor. Therefore, it is not fully compatible with Nikon DSLRs such as the Nikon D40, D50, D3100, D5100, etc.

This is an interesting lens to me. Interesting meaning I’m still not quite sure what I think of it despite shooting it a lot. Lets start with the clear-cut reason I shoot it: its the best autofocus 85mm f/1.4 prime lens made for Nikon cameras. It has very smooth out-of-focus highlights, great color and a wonderful 3-D effect. Its very well built and sturdy. Really, it’s an excellent lens.

So why the hesitation? There are a couple of minor things about it that drive me crazy. It does autofocus but on its own pace, which is rather slow. You aren’t shooting indoor sports with it (unless you have killer instincts about where the shot is going to be). And I hate the screw-on metal hood. Plus, it has a bit more chromatic aberration than I like (I know, that’s easy to fix in post processing). Mostly though, while I like the lens a lot, I think it could be so much better. I much prefer the Zeiss 85 and I don’t mind manually focusing so I reach for that more, but I realize that’s not for everyone. So my conclusion? A very nice lens that badly needs a makeover to make it a great lens.
