Nikon 200-400mm f/4 AF-S VR II

The update to the original Nikon 200-400.

It’s a Vibration Reduction (II) 200-400mm zoom lens with Silent Wave Motor technology for fast focusing. It’s remarkably sharp and fast enough to freeze action in decent light.

The vibration reduction system allows it to be handheld (and Nikon touts this in all their ads for it), but you’ll need a strong shoulder to do it all day. We recommend a monopod for a day’s shooting. In addition to normal VR, the system has an ‘active mode’ for times when lens movement is more extreme.

A remarkable lens with no equal on any other camera body.

I’ll simply repeat what I say about the Mk I version below, because while there is supposed to be a difference in the coatings, and a slightly better VR in the MK II, I certainly can’t tell any difference in real-world shooting. They are both excellent, superb, and unique lenses. This one is more expensive, though, so if you have too much money, I’d go with this one.

This is not your grandfather’s 80-400 VR! Please, get out your tripod or monopod, unless you’re using Barry Bonds’ trainer, this is a hefty beast, although its certainly handholdable (I think I just made up a word) for a few shots.

But wow, is it worth the weight and the price. Lightning-fast focusing, as sharp as most prime lenses, and VR that really works make this a truly amazing lens. In decent light this lens takes a 1.4x teleconverter very well giving a nice 280-560 f/5.6 VR zoom. Very sweet.
