![]() The newest version of Nikons 500mm supertelephoto. The 500 f/4 VR has Silent Wave Motor for fast autofocusing, 3 Extra-low dispersion elements and Nano Crystal Coat to reduce flare and ghosting, and Nikon’s newest Vibration Reduction system. The VR system not only provides 4 stops of vibration reduction, its automatic tripod sensing mode reduces vibration induced by mirror slap and shutter release. Roger’s Take: Its everything you’ve heard: sharp as a tack and the VR system keeps it so steady you can shoot it handheld (at least for a while). It takes a 1.4x or 1.7x teleconverter just fine if there’s enough light available. Its a large lens but not ridiculously heavy. You can shoot it on a sturdy ballhead, it doesn’t absolutely require a Wimberley type head. My highest recommendation for wildlife photography, you won’t be disappointed. Its the photography equivalent of a D cup: you’ll make lots of friends wherever you take it. Specs:
