![]() The Nikon 600mm f/4G AF-S VR Lens is a premium ultrafast super telephoto lens, currently the longest in the Nikon autofocus lens system. Its lightweight construction incorporates a magnesium die-cast barrel, and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations. This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) system that minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed of about 4 stops faster. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod. The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) feature provides swift autofocus with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation. This is a G-type lens with aperture changes done via the camera’s command dial. Improved M/A mode provides instant and fast switching from autofocus to manual focus with nearly no time lag. Three ED (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements restrict chromatic aberrations to a minimum and Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity. The 600 also features a 9-bladed aperture diaphragm creating smooth out-of-focus highlights. Roger’s take: Its not often that I’m left speechless, but this one is just obvious – if you’ve got good support (read sturdy tripod and gimbal head) this lens is phenomenal. Perfect. Still sharp with a 1.4x teleconverter, and amazingly sharp without one. There’s really nothing else to be said. One effective technique to get some room when you’re at a crowded airshow: set the 600 vertically with the hood end on the ground, get a serious look on your face, and announce loudly “you folks should step back from the blast area before we launch this”.
