The Sigma 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG HSM OS for Nikon allows you a greater working distance when shooting small objects in true 1:1 magnification. It’s compatible with both full-frame and crop-frame Nikon cameras and features Sigma’s fast HSM focusing motor and 4-stops Optical Stabilization. With full-time manual focus and a focus limit switch, this lens can be used to shoot a variety of subjects. Its minimum focus distance of 18.5" allows for plenty of room for lighting subjects.
Optically, the 180mm f/2.8 APO Macro EX DG HSM OS utilizes 3 FLD glass elements for correcting color aberrations, as well as a floating inner focusing system to reduce field curvature and distortion. Ghosting and flare is eliminated via Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer coatings, which also provides images with more contrast and sharpness. Its 9-blade diaphragm allows for pleasing bokeh (background blur) whether shooting 1:1 macro or portraits, especially when shooting wide open.

Here’s another one of my ‘if you don’t already know what this is, you probably don’t want it’ takes. This is a pretty large lens- one I’d recommend using a tripod with. The Optical Stabilization works very well, but unless you’ve got strong hands you’re going to tire after using it for a while.
Other than that though, it’s an amazing lens. At 180mm you get a lot of distance between the lens and the subject, which simplifies lighting and positioning a great deal. The long focal length also tends to make the background more blurred, which really isolates the subject from the background.
It is, however, a specialty lens, so unless you’re a dedicated Macro shooter, you’d probably be better off with a Nikon 105mm f/2.8L Micro VR which is considerably smaller.
