Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC for Nikon

Available Today

The Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC was the first full-frame compatible 24-70mm with an in-lens image stabilizer by any manufacturer. With 24-70mm being the go-to lens for event shooters, including a stabilizer was only a matter of time. Its f/2.8 aperture makes low light shooting possible, with the stabilizer adding even more possibilities. It features Tamron’s USD autofocus motor for fast, silent operation.

While the built-in Vibration Compensation is what makes this lens stand out, the optical formula is also quite good. The 24-70mm VC utilizes the best in Tamron’s arsenal of optics, with three LD elements, three aspherical lenses, one hybrid aspherical lens, and two XR lenses. With this lens, Tamron has outgrown “third-party alternative” and moved into a category of its own.

For several years I had called Tamron’s old 28-75 f/2.8 lens the best bargain in photography. At $1,200 nobody is going to put a bargain tag on this lens, but I will give it ‘worth the money’. It’s at least as sharp as the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S. The vibration control is a good thing. Even if you don’t think you’ll need it, you’ll use it. And like it.

Autofocus doesn’t seem quite as fast as the Nikon, but it’s reasonably close. There’s some vignetting in the corners on a full-frame camera (about 2 stops) but that’s easily removed in post processing. And given the molded and hybrid aspheric elements, it’s not surprising that the lens has ‘onion bokeh’ but that’s not a major problem for most people. The corners are softer at the 24mm end than at 70 on a full-frame camera but the difference isn’t noticeable on a crop sensor camera, and isn’t severe.

Even a skeptic has to admit this 90% of the Nikon lens for 60% of the price. Personally, I think it’s the equal of the Nikon for 60% of the price.
