A reflex (mirror) telephoto lens has advantages and disadvantages. It is remarkably small and light for the magnification it achieves, scarcely larger than a normal size lens. Reflecting light off of mirrors, rather than bending it through lenses, eliminates chromatic abberation and provides excellent sharpness and contrast. The aperture is fixed at f8, however, and out of focus highlights have a ‘doughnut’ shape rather than a smooth spherical shape.
Roger’s take: OK, I admit it. I wanted to see if an f/8 500mm lens could be handheld and thought, maybe, just maybe with the in-body image stabilization it might. I’ve got to say this little lens far exceeded my expectations. It’s quite sharp, very small (well, compared to conventional telephotos) and on a winter afternoon I got very nice results handholding it. It does have the expected “mirror bokeh” but still quite a pleasant surprise.
