Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM for Sony

The newest Sigma wide aperture standard zoom lens (not the pre-existing one) with HSM motor for rapid autofocus. DG is a designation that Sigma uses on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the use of ELD and SLD glass provides excellent correction of all types of aberrations. It has a 9 bladed diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus highlights.

Roger’s take: We haven’t been huge Sigma fans, but this lens is turning us around a bit. We were pleasantly surprised that the copies we received were all focusing accurately, and focusing quite quickly at that. The lens seems well built, and the rings feel solid. At f/4 and higher the lens is very sharp and can hang with the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 (we didn’t do any pixel-peeping, hair-splitting tests, but it looks good). At f/2.8 it’s clearly softer: I’d call it usable, but the lens is clearly sharper at f/4. But, given the price difference, I’d consider it a reasonable alternative to the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8.
