Sony 300mm f/2.8G SSM

A professional level supertelephoto lens with a high speed Supersonic Wave Motor that offers amazingly fast autofocusing and 3 aspherical elements to eliminate field curvature and chromatic aberration. The 300mm f/2.8 has ‘focus lock’ buttons, two manual focus modes (with and without autofocus assist), as well as a focus range limiter to allow every aid to accurately focus. It also has a 9 blade circular aperture to provide smooth out-of-focus blur. All-in-all, the best supertelephoto available for Sony dSLR’s.

Roger’s Take: OK, you can rent it now. I’ve been playing with it the last two weekends. This is possibly the best 300 f/2.8 I’ve shot with—don’t get me wrong, the Canon and Nikon 300 f/2.8 primes are as good as it gets. The Sony is every bit as good as the competitors. If all you’ve ever shot with at the supertelephoto end is a zoom, you’re in for a treat: even with a 1.4x teleconverter mounted, this is sharper, autofocuses faster, and has smoother bokeh than any zoom you’ve ever tried. Simply outstanding. Yeah, I know, for what it costs, it ought to.

Special note: Don’t lose the lens hood. It costs $1,100 to replace. No, I’m not kidding.
