Tamron 200-500mm f/5-6.3 SP Di LD for Sony

This is a very interesting supertelephoto zoom with a marvelous range. It is well regarded for its sharpness, and with built-in image stabilization on Sony bodies, even better. The Tamron is very lightweight for a lens of this focal length, quite sharp throughout its zoom range, and can focus as closely as 2.5 meters which can be very interesting at the 500mm length.

Everyone forgets about this telephoto zoom, but it should be considered for all of you who are backpacking and hiking. It’s a nice sharp lens that is much lighter in weight than anything else available. You’ll need either good light or a tripod to get sharp 500mm photos at f/6.3, but given that it produces great images – and, with Sony’s in-camera image stabilization, it’s a much more useful lens for Alpha shooters than it is in other mounts. Is the Sony 70-400mm better? Yes, it is, but it’s a lot bigger, much more expensive, and not quite as long.
