The Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 E PZ OSS is a compact standard zoom lens for Sony NEX cameras and camcorders. It features an electronically-activated, retractable power zoom that’s activated when the camera is powered on; This allows the lens to come in at a mere 1.18" when not in use. The 35mm-equivalent focal length of 24-75mm makes it a great choice for a everyday, walk-around lens, and Sony’s built-in OSS stabilizer unit provides up to 4-stops of correction for camera shake.
Despite its very compact size, the 16-50mm PZ packs quite an optical punch. It uses one ED and four aspherical elements to minimize optical aberrations and provide high contrast images with little field curvature. The power zoom function has a zoom rocker switch on the side of the lens that allows zoom adjustment, but also features a dual-function control ring that’s used for both zooming and manual focus. When set to autofocus, it functions as a power zoom ring, allowing a more hands-on approach than the rocker switch. When set to manual focus, it provides accurate manual focus adjustment. This method works in both still and video shooting, making the 16-50mm PZ a great choice for any and all users. The lens is threaded to accept 40.5mm filters, and includes a petaled lens hood to help prevent lens flare.
