Sony-Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 E Sonnar

The Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 E Sonnar is designed for Sony NEX E-mount still and video cameras. The Sony Zeiss lenses have always offered the highest quality possible for Sony A-mount cameras, and with the 24mm f1.8, this now extends to the E-mount mirrorless cameras. It gives users a 36mm equivalent lens and its fast f1.8 aperture allows for low-light shooting and, in combination with the 7-blade circular aperture, a very pleasing background blur.
The lens is based on the classic Carl Zeiss Sonnar lens design. It utilizes both aspherical and ED elements to optimize optical quality for corner sharpness and keep aberrations down. The lens body itself is made of aluminum alloy and features a very smooth manual focus ring. The silent autofocus motor works great for both still and video shooting, and the option to use Direct Manual Focus (DMF) for fine-tuning focus makes shooting with a shallow depth-of-field more accurate. It focuses to a very close 6.2", which allows for a very interesting 1:4 pseudo-macro effect.

What can I say, this is the type of lens NEX users have been waiting for. You get great image quality, a fast aperture, and a metal body. Can I repeat that? A metal body! You don’t have to feel like you’re shooting with a toy anymore. As you’ve probably already read somewhere, this lens is not it’s sharpest at f1.8, but it’s still WAY better wide open than the other E-mount lenses out right now. It does have some distortion in the corners, but nothing like the 16mm E-mount. Also, do note that it doesn’t have the best corner sharpness at infinity, so watch out for that. Nevertheless, if you’ve got an NEX camera, you’ll want this lens!
