The Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 is Tamron’s “Professional Grade” wide angle lens for crop sensor cameras such as the 50D and the T1i. It is designed to compete directly with Canon’s 17-55 f/2.8 IS and provides similar range and sharpness. It lacks the Image Stabilization of the Canon lens, but is much more affordable.
Roger’s take: One of the best value lenses around. It’s arguably as good as the much pricier lenses in this range on a crop sensor camera at a much more attractive price, although it’s being replaced by a VC (vibration control) version.
