The Lensbaby Composer Pro With Sweet 35 Optic is the update to the popular Lensbaby Composer. It offers several improvements over it’s predecessor, most notably the new high quality metal barrel construction with a smooth, tight focus ring. Aperture is adjusted by turning the front dial on the new Sweet 35 optic rather than the old removable aperture disc method. With an APS-C sensor camera, the sweet spot size ranges from 15% at f/2.5 to 40%, at f/22 of the total image area. With the Sweet 35’s aperture range of f2.5-22, shooting in nearly any condition is possible. Not only does it’s 35mm focal length offers a more all-around feel then the previous Composer’s 50mm focal length, but the image quality is greatly improved. Anyone who was previously nervous about the image quality of a Lensbaby will be very pleased with the Sweet 35.
Otherwise, the Composer Pro functions the same as the original, with the ability to select your focus point by tilting the front section of the lens. Once the desired area is selected, the tightening right can be turned to ensure the lens does shift in position. The Composer Pro is a wonderful specialty tool for portrait photographers, as well as anyone who’s looking to isolate the subject. Landscape, street, food, fine art, you name it, the Composer Pro can be used to photograph it.
Before we got this lens, I wasn’t a fan of Lensbaby’s offerings. I always thought they were a neat idea with execution that left me wanting. This, however, is a substantial improvement over the original Composer. The sharp portions of the image are much sharper, and aperture control is no longer a set of cumbersome magnetic discs. The new 12-bladed aperture, with click stops at whole stops, is a breeze to use. The wider angle of view doesn’t give me that awful tunnel vision feel that the 50 did. This is actually a lens I feel much more inclined to use. If you were hesitant to try a Lensbaby before, I’d give this one a spin.
