Zeiss ZF.2 25mm F/2.8 for Nikon

Pre-order

The Zeiss ZF.2 25mm f2.8 lens is a specialty wide-angle lens with a very close focusing range of 6.7" from sensor to subject, allowing for creative macro shots. It has an aperture of f2.8, which is fast enough to use in low-light, as well as provide background blur.

The ZF.2 lenses feature an electronic interface (CPU) which enables the ZF.2 lenses to support all important operating modes such as shutter priority, aperture priority and programmed auto exposure or manual exposure settings even on non-AI compatible camera housings. These are manual focus lenses. Why go through the trouble of manually focusing? Well, first of all, at 25mm length its not much trouble. But more importantly, you get the exceptional Zeiss sharpness, color, and high microcontrast that makes these lenses arguably the best prime lenses in the world.

The 25mm is fairly unique in it’s ability to focus close. As close as 6.7 inches. That alone makes this lens rather different in the wide-angle genre. It does not have a floating element, however, and isn’t quite as sharp close up as it is at a bit of distance, so don’t think of it as a Macro lens, rather as one that can take an extreme close up for an interesting effect. It has a bit of field curvature, so like the 28mm, lens at closer ranges it will be very sharp in the center, not nearly as sharp in the corners and edges. At landscape distances and stopped down to f/4, though, it’s sharp edge-to-edge.

If you’re interested in finding good reviews of the various ZF lenses, with in-depth analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, we recommend spending a few dollars and getting Lloyd Chambers online review of the ZF lineup.
