The Canon EOS SL1 is an extremely compact entry-level DSLR. While from a specs standpoint it’s quite similar to the Canon EOS T5i, the SL1 sheds 6 oz. in weight and a noticeable difference in dimensional size. Despite its very small footprint, it features an 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor with Canon’s DIGIC 5 Image Processor that allows high-speed continuous shooting of up to 4 fps. The SL1 has a normal ISO range of 100-12800, giving photographers the flexibility to shoot in low-light conditions. It has the same 9-point all cross-type AF system as the T5i with high-precision dual cross f/2.8 center point for optimum autofocus performance, but does get a second generation Hybrid CMOS AF System for shooting video and stills in Live View.
On the video front, the SL1 is also quite similar to its big brother, featuring Canon’s Movie Servo AF which allows continuous focus of moving subjects while recording (with compatible STM lenses). It has a built-in mono microphone and 3.5mm input for connecting an external mic, and the in-camera manual audio level adjustment enables high quality audio. The SL1 has a fixed 3.0" 1,040K touchsceen for easy settings adjustments, as well as nearly all the dedicated buttons you’d expect to find on a Rebel-series camera.
The SL1 is compatibile with both Canon EF and EF-S lenses. It records its JPEG, RAW, and MOV files to SDHC/XC memory cards.
This adorable little camera has the same Canon 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and video specs of it’s larger relative the Rebel T5i, leaving one to ponder, if image is everything, why not save a few bucks. For those concerned with audio however, you’ll probably want to consider going dual system or at least accessorizing with a compact, hot shoe mountable mic.
