The PowerShot series of cameras are excellent for both pros and amateurs – it’s not a pro DSLR, but it still manages to provide the photographer with many exciting features of one.

We loved the fact that the G11 came out with less megapixels than its predecessor, improving image quality by giving up a bit of resolution. We’re really glad that the G12 continued that plan. 10 megapixel still images provide what we think is optimal resolution in a point-and-shoot size sensor. It can shoot RAW or JPEG files to SD memory cards. It can also shoot 720P (1280×720) HD video with stereo audio.

The G12 has a 3200 ISO setting, and it does better at reasonably high ISO (400-800) than any other point-and-shoot we’ve used. It has a 5x zoom lens (28mm equivalent at the wide end) with Canon’s hybrid image atabilization and an electronic auto-level to help keep your horizons straight. It also has a High Dynamic Range shot option that will, in theory at least, preserve highlights and shadows. The articulated 2.8" LCD is certainly a pleasure to use.

We continue to carry the Canon G series because they’re simply the most capable point-and-shoot cameras on the market. When you don’t want to carry your SLR, they prove to be a great choice.
