Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS

Available Today

Called “the streetsweeper”, this is Canon’s widest range L-series zoom. Quite sharp at all focal lengths with a good Image Stabilization system, it is used when the photographer needs a one-lens solution. It’s a large lens, similar in size to the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS or Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. It is also a telescoping zoom lens like the 100-400mm.

If you want a superzoom (10x) on a full-frame Canon camera, this is the one choice for you. It’s extremely sharp throughout the zoom range, although it has a bit of distortion at the long and short ends. It can be very useful when you are in conditions where changing lenses is not something you want to do, either because of ambient conditions or simply because there’s not time.

Don’t mistake it for a convenient walkaround, though, like the small superzooms for crop-sensor cameras. This is a big beast of a lens (the size of the 70-200 f/2.8 or 100-400) that you probably would not want hanging around your neck all day.
