Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM A1 for Canon

Available Today

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Canon is a standard zoom lens designed specifically for crop sensor DSLR’s. With a full-frame equivalent focal length of 27-112mm, it provides a wide range that fits with many everyday shooting situations. The lens works well in low light conditions with a maximum aperture of f/2.8-4 and built-in Optical Stabilizer that provides providing up to a four-stop reduction in camera shake. The Hyper Sonic AF Motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet auto focusing that benefits not only photographers, but videographers as well. This AF motor can also be instantly deactivated by rotating the manual focus ring, giving you the ability to fine-tune your focus manually.

The lens construction features Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) materials to help reduce the overall weight and size of the lens barrel by about 30%. As a member of Sigma’s Contemporary lens line, this lens is also compatible with the Sigma USB Dock for Canon EF Lenses which allows users to specify certain parameters like fine-tuning microfocus through the Sigma Optimization Pro software.

When I read the manufacturer’s marketing BS, like we’ve reproduced above, I get a little nauseous. For example “AF motor can be instantly deactivated” sounds a lot better than “doesn’t have full-time manual focus”, doesn’t it? Anyway, what we have here is a nice, consumer-grade kit lens alternative. It’s f/2.8 aperture at the wide end is a bit better than most kit lenses, as is it’s range. The OS is very effective.

It’s very soft in the edges and has pretty severe barrel distortion at 17mm, along with plenty of vignetting. Center sharpness is good throughout the zoom range. If you’re very concerned with image quality, don’t confuse this with a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS or even a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC , which remain f/2.8 throughout their zoom range and sharpen up a lot when stopped down to f/4, which this lens is throughout it’s range. But then again, the Sigma is a lot less expensive, gives you a bit more range, and is just fine for making images for online jpgs, etc.

Only Works With: Crop sensor Canon cameras (T5i, 60D ,7D, etc…)
