The Canon 2x Teleconverter III is designed to provide extended range with a Canon L-series telephoto lens. It features five groups / nine elements that ensure improved optical performance. All optical elements use Canon’s super-spectra coating, which reduces ghosting and flare to minimize post-processing requirements and a fluorine coating on the front and rear elements makes smudge marks much easier to clean.
The extender features an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering, and ID information is available. Canon claims that, when combined with the range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable higher AF accuracy.
- The Canon 2x will not fit on wide angle zooms, standard zooms, wide angle primes or many third-party lenses.
- If you rent a 2x teleconverter and are using it on any lens other than the ones listed below, you are probably not going to be happy with the result, if it works at all:
- Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L
- Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
- Canon 200mm f/2 IS
- Canon 300mm f/2.8 IS or IS II
- Canon 400mm f/2.8 IS or IS II
- Canon 500mm f/4L IS or IS II
- Canon 600mm f/4L IS or IS II
If you decide you want to use it with another lens, do so at your own risk. Please don’t expect us to refund the rental when it didn’t work with your 70-300 f/5.6 zoom.
Like the Canon 1.4X TC III, the Canon 2X TC III is a great alternative if you need more reach with your compatible telephoto lens. While previous generations had a very noticeable affect on image quality and AF performance, the TC III is huge leap forward. Image quality and AF performance take a slight hit with the 2X, but it’s definitely not a dealbreaker. It’s really best to use on the Canon L-series superteles, but it can be used on the 70-200mm f/2.8L and IS II with good results. However, as a general rule, remember that low light does not mix well with teleconverters. You will see focus hunting.
