The PowerShot G1 X (or G1X) is the latest in Canon’s line of G-series compact cameras. However, this time around, Canon made quite the change. Unlike previous G-series cameras, the G1 X drops the typical compact camera sensor in favor of an all-new 14.3MP 1.5" CMOS sensor. It’s sensor size falls right in between that of a Micro 4/3rds sensor and a typical Canon APS-C sensor. Despite such a leap from the previous 1/1.7" sensor of the G12 (6 times larger!), the physical sizes of the two cameras are still close. Unlike the G12’s lens, the G1 X’s lens doesn’t not retract back into the camera body, thus making the camera officially jacket-pocket sized.
With the larger sensor size comes huge improvements in image quality and ISO performance. Like the previous G-series cameras, the G1 X has RAW capabilities (14-bit) and full manual controls. It reaches a max ISO of 12800, and has a 35mm-equivalent 28-112mm f2.8-5.8 lens. Throw in the new DIGIC 5 processor and optical IS, and you’ve got a compact camera that can hold it’s own in low-light situations. The built-in, pop-up flash and external hotshoe allow for further low-light options. It’s 3", 920k Vari-Angle rear LCD is great for composing and reviewing images, while the optical viewfinder remains for those who prefer shooting traditionally. Other new features include the built-in High Dynamic Range mode for in-camera HDR shooting, Movie Digest mode, and 1080p HD video recording.

What you don’t get is a viewfinder. It says it has one, but I’ve seen viewfinders and this isn’t a viewfinder. You’ll do all of your composing and shooting with the LCD. You don’t get a wide aperture lens. You also don’t get wider than a 28mm (full-frame equivalent) focal length. The camera is small, but not the smallest of the new cameras by any means. It will fit in your jacket pocket or purse, but that’s about it. The ergonomics are OK.
The bottom line is if you think of this as a supercharged G12, you’ll be correct and you’ll love it. If you think of it as an SLR alternative, probably not so much. For me, much as I want to love the camera for it’s great sensor, the viewfinder is really a deal breaker.
