The Nikon 1 V1 has a 10 Megapixel CX size sensor (13.2 × 8.8mm which is a 2.7x crop factor), and has a 135 point hybrid phase detection/contrast detection auotofocus. The AF delivers 10 frames-per-second capture in autofocus mode and 60fps in manual mode. It handles ISO up to 3200 (6400 in expanded mode). The included 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens is equivalent to a 27-81mm after sensor crop.

The most noticeable difference between the 1 V1 and the a J1 is that the V1 has a 1.4 million dot high resolution Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) that automatically activates when the user raises the camera to their eye. The V1 camera also features Nikon’s new Multi-Accessory Port for attaching options such as the new SB-N5 compact speedlight, or the GP-N100 GPS module (neither are included). For those making movies, the V1 has a stereo microphone input for professional quality audio.

Summary of the differences between the V1 and J1 cameras:

  • The V1 is significantly thicker front to back, the J1 smaller
  • The V1 has a built-in electrical viewfinder and an accessory port, but no built-in flash
  • The V1 has a higher resolution rear LCD screen
  • The J1 has a small built-in flash
  • The V1 has both mechanical and electronic shutter, the J1 only electronic shutter

Lensrentals’ take

(4 of us took these cameras home to use separately and then pooled our opinions.) First of all let’s get what this is NOT out of the way. It is NOT an SLR replacement. It is not going to compete with an NEX camera shooting high quality lenses on an adapter. You probably are NOT going to make 11 X 14 prints from it.

What it is, though, is quite cool and completely different. Every small camera has a bunch of ‘gadget modes’ but on this camera they really are useful: Scene Auto Selector is a really smart auto mode, giving good results without having to ever touch any settings. Smart Photo Selector captures a succession of images with a just one click and selects the best image or images to save, ensuring you always get a good shot (no more blinking eyes).

With Motion Snapshot (see below), you can capture a few seconds of video in slow-motion and combine it with a still image with built-in audio soundtrack – basically a portrait with just enough movement to be cool – a smile, wink, or just the change of facial expression. Low light capabilities with a wide ISO range of 100-3200 and 6400 are actually useful. In addition to taking stills while recording HD video, it also can record slow motion movies at 400 or 1200 fps (640 X 240 pixels). To use these features, you’ll need Nikon’s View NX2 software

The bottom line: It’s not an SLR replacement by any means and not the camera for serious photography. But it’s far higher quality and much more capable than even the best point-and-shoot. It’s possibly the most fun camera we’ve played with in years. The perfect camera for not-so-serious photographers, or serious photographers who aren’t being serious at the moment. If the images are going to end up online, rather than large prints, in a lot of ways it’s a better choice than an SLR.
