The Fuji X10 is the lastest addition to our selection of compact cameras. It is a classic-styled point-and-shoot camera with advanced control options. Its 12mp 2/3" EXR sensor gives great image quality in a wide range of conditions. It has a fast, optically stabilized 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) f2-2.8 manual zoom lens that gives users the feeling of shooting with an SLR zoom lens but in a much more compact body. There are the typically point-and-shoot scene modes, which work quite well for beginners, as well as a few advanced EXR shooting modes which enable the camera to record high-quality images in harsh shooting conditions. The camera offers users the ability to shoot with a built-in optical viewfinder or compose shots using the 2.8" rear LCD via live-view. There is a dedicated RAW button to easily switch between RAW and JPEG formats as well as a built-in pop-up fill flash. Other features include 1080p HD video recording, multiple film simulation modes, Motion Panarama mode, built-in electronic horizon level, and four diverse auto-bracketing modes. It takes SDHC/XC memory cards for large storage capabilities.
The X10 is designed for users who want very high quality images in a point-and-shoot that they can take where DSLRs would be a burden. It’s controls are quite thorough for even the most demanding photogs while still offering many scene modes for those who just want to pick up and shoot. It’s ideal for vacations or a day out walking around where you may want to take photos.
This has been a controversial camera, probably because expectations for it were so high. On the downside it has a rather different interface that took a little getting used to. I still don’t understand taking off the cap and turning the lens as the method of turning on the camera. I have to search the menus a bit to find my way to functions I want.
But quirkiness aside, it is currently my favorite point and shoot. So much so that I’m buying one for my wife who wants a replacement for her Canon G11. The image quality is really excellent for a point and shoot, and the f/2-2.8 lens is just wonderful. Those, along with it’s small size make it my choice among the current crop of point and shoot cameras. It’s not an SLR or mirrorless camera replacement, but it is high enough quality that I wouldn’t hesitate to make 5 X 7 prints which is not something I’ve said about point and shoots in the past.
