The Sony Alpha a5100 is an entry-level compact mirrorless camera and update to the Sony NEX-5T. Key features include:
24.3MP APS-C Sensor. The a5100 gets its sensor from its big brother, the a6000, providing a large increase in resolution over its 16MP predecessor. You have the same normal ISO range of 100-25600 with the latest BIONZ X image processor, providing great image quality at higher ISOs.
E-Mount. Compatible with a wide variety of E-mount lenses, as well as numerous other mounts via adapter.
180° Tilting LCD. The large 3.0”, 921.6k-dot rear LCD offers 180º tilting for self portraits, as well as the normal arm’s length shooting. White Magic technology provides great visibility in bright sunlight making image composition and review much easier, while the touchscreen feature enables easy setting adjustment from the screen.
Fast Hybrid Autofocus. Like the a6000, the a5100 features a tandem 179-point phase-detection/25-point contrast-detection system that covers about 90% of the sensor. This enables significantly improved continuous autofocus and tracking performance while also increasing speed and accuracy. While the a5100 isn’t quite the speed demon that the a6000 is, it still offers a respectable 6 fps continuous high mode with AF tracking enabled. This improvement also translates into video as well.
Full HD Video Recording. The a5100’s video capabilities far surpass those of the a6000. The same Full 1080p HD @ 60/24 fps in the AVCHD (28 Mbps) is there, but the a5100 also offers 1080p HD @ 24/30/60 fps in a 50 Mbps XAVC S codec. For even higher quality, you can output 1080p 60 fps uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 video via the micro HDMI input. Additional video features include manual focus peaking, a zebra function, and a built-in stereo microphone.
Built-In Wi-Fi and NFC Connectivity./ Like other recent E-mount cameras, the a5100 offers built-in Wi-Fi for image capture and review using Sony’s line of PlayMemories apps on a smart device.
Simplified Controls. The entry-level a5000 offers simplified controls with dedicated help button on the back for explaining various settings. You still get a zoom rocker switch for controlling servo-zoom lenses, rear dial for making adjustments, and built-in pop-up flash for quick fill. It uses the same NP-FW50 rechargeable battery that’s rated for about 400 shots per charge, and images are recorded to SDHC/XC memory cards.
