The Leica M Monochrom could be considered the anti-digital camera, as it forgoes advances in digital technology development, providing true RAW black and white images. It features a specially designed 18MP CCD that, instead of recording color values at each pixel site, only sees luminous values. This provides images with extremely low noise at even the highest sensitivities, with per-pixel sharpness that cannot be duplicated with standard color sensors. The design and build quality is very similar to the Leica M9, sharing the same 2.5" rear LCD and dials, making it an easy step for previous M9 users.. It follows the same theme of traditional Leica M cameras, with a matte black finish, leatherette grip, and etched Leica logo on the hotshoe mount.
Images are recorded in either Adobe DNG RAW files or JPG, allowing the flexibility to use nearly any editing software. You have in-camera image editing options for JPG images, allowing you to convert images in classic toning effects of sepia, cool, and selenium tone. Its maximum ISO level of 10,000 provides low-light shooting capabilities that were previously not possible with Leica M cameras. The camera has Leica’s standard rangefinder-coupled viewfinder, and accepts nearly all M-mount manual focus lenses. It’s powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and records images to SDHC memory cards.
WARNING: It has been widely reported that Sandisk Extreme Pro memory cards are not compatible with this camera. With that said, we recommend using the Extreme models instead. Also, no SDXC memory card is supported
A bargain is something you don’t need at a price you can’t resist. This is something you don’t need at a price you can’t afford. But, damn, it’s a spectacularly awesome thing you don’t need. There’s no logical reason I would need this camera, at all. I can’t even focus a rangefinder because of some eye problems.
But when I see the images that come out of it, ‘need’ has nothing to do with it. It’s lust, pure and simple. They are different, spectacularly different. I’ve heard people say they can make images just like this with high resolution SLR images and post-processing. They can’t. What comes out of this camera is absolutely unique.
If I was a great marketing guy, I’d tell you rent this for a week and get it out of your system. But I’ll be honest. You won’t get it out of your system. At least I haven’t.
I can’t even focus it. I just set the lens to hyperfocal distance, bang away for a while, and then get home, pop the card in the computer, and it’s like Christmas. I’m unwrapping images going “oh, boy, let’s see what I got”. And whatever I got isn’t quite like anything else I can get with any other camera.
