Panasonic GX8

Available Today

The Panasonic GX8 is an advanced enthusiast-level mirrorless camera and update to the Panasonic GX7. Key features include:

  • 20.3MP Live MOS Sensor. The GX8 is the first Micro 4/3 camera to enter the 20MP territory. While the relatively small increase in resolution isn’t going to move mountains, the updated Venus Engine processor does improve on low light performance, now topping out at ISO 25,600 (Do note we’re not saying this is usable, just that the camera offers the option).
  • Image Stabilization. Like its predecessor, the GX8 features in-camera image stabilization. However, this updated 4-axis version features the ability to work in tandem with in-lens stabilizers, or what they refer to as Dual IS.
  • DFD Autofocus System. Short for depth-from-defocus, it’s a fancy way of saying the GX8 uses contrast-detection to acquire focus in conditions down to -4EV. There’s subject tracking continuous focus for keeping up with moving subjects, and focus peaking helps to assist manual focusing in both still and video shooting.
  • 4K. The video functionality is largely the same as that of the G7. The GX8 records 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) at 24p/30p in the MP4 format with a bitrate of 100Mbps. Full HD 1080/60p capture has the option of either MP4 or AVCHD. Audio is captured using the built-in stereo mic or external via its 2.5mm input (yes, it’s unfortunately 2.5mm). In addition to standard 4K video, the GX8 has a few 4K photo modes that enable 30fps capture of 8MP JPEG stills for up to 30 minutes with full exposure control.
  • Other Notable Features. Just like the G7, there’s built-in wifi connectivity for wireless transfer of images and remote camera operation using the free smartphone app. The camera records to SDHC / XC memory cards, while the included rechargeable battery is rated for roughly 330 shots per charge.

Ryan’s Take

The advantage of the GX8, like many Micro 4/3 cameras, is that you can capture some really great stills without having to lug around a full-size DSLR body. Panasonic’s 12-35 and 35-100 are both great matches for this camera, and you could fit that whole kit in a small backpack with plenty of room to spare. If you’re in the market for 4K, though, I’d keep looking. We carry more capable video cameras at similar price points. They’re a little more expensive, sure, but worth it in the long run if video is a priority.
