Nikon’s WT-5A Wireless Transmitter allows users to transmit images from the Nikon D4 to a computer, as well as control camera settings via Camera Control Pro 2 software (NOT INCLUDED). A new feature introduced on the Nikon WT-5A is the ability to operate camera controls on an iPhone or iPad (also not included) using the new HTTP Mode. The WT-5A transmitter itself does not take its own battery, instead drawing power from the camera.
Please Note: This is not a plug-and-play device. It requires a tedious setup that may take some time and understanding of networking to perform. Please allow yourself time to read the manual to familiarize yourself with the process. We can only offer tech support for physically connecting the transmitter to the camera. Its setup varies greatly depending on how your wireless network is setup. For more details, you can see the manual here.
On a coolness level, the WT-5A Wireless Transmitter gets two thumbs up. You’ve got a few different options as to how / where the images are being sent, as well as a pretty fun remote camera control function. It does have a fair amount of lag between what you see on your iPhone / iPad and what’s actually happening, but it can still be useful. I wouldn’t say the technology is quite there yet, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. From the image transfer side, the WT-5A, like previous wireless transmitters, leaves me wanting more speed. If you shoot in RAW, you’re going to be waiting for transfers to complete. There’s no easy way around it. The WT-5A’s largest downfall is going to be the setup. It’s not difficult if you have a grasp on Wi-Fi, but you might have to try the same step a couple times for it to work as it’s a bit buggy. Basically, if the whole process is something new to you, don’t try to set it up 5 minutes before your shoot. If you give yourself some time for setup and transfer, you should be able to get it working.
