The Nikon Coolpix A is Nikon’s entry into the large-sensor point-and-shoot category and features a 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, similar to that of the Nikon D7000. Its fixed 18.5mm f/2.8 lens provides an equivalent focal length of 28mm, making it a great choice for landscapes, street photography, and all-around general use. The contrast-detect AF system provides fast, accurate performance, with the ability to switch to manual focus when needed.
While the Coolpix A is essentially a point-and-shoot camera, it offers full manual controls with an ISO range of 100-25600 and features a built-in flash for providing quick fill, as well as a standard hotshoe that’s compatible with Nikon’s Speedlight lineup. Like many other compact cameras, it also records Full HD movies at 30fps with stereo sound. Other notable features are a collection of creative shooting modes, various in-camera image editing functions, two user-defined modes, and Wi-Fi connectivity to compatible smartphones via the Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter (separate rental item). The Coolpix A writes RAW / JPEG images and HD video to SDHC / XC memory cards, and uses the Nikon EN-EL20 rechargeable battery.

So it seems like everybody is making a large-sensor compact camera these days, and the Coolpix A is Nikon’s take. While the 18.5mm f/2.8 (28mm equivalent) lens can be somewhat limiting, it does give some great results. High ISO performance is very good and autofocus speed is adequate for stationary subjects, but is a tad slow if shooting moving subjects. I personally prefer a viewfinder, so the lack of one really hurts it in my opinion, but image quality nearly makes up for the omission. If you’re already a Nikon user and are familiar with their menu system and color rendition, then the Coolpix A is a great choice for a compact camera if you like the 28mm focal length.
